Thailand urges UAE not to shelter Thaksin - Thailand - politics - Thaksin Shinawatra - UAE

Thailand has asked the United Arab Emirates not to allow fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to continue to stay in Dubai and use it as his base to topple the Thai government, an aide to the foreign minister, Chavanont Intarakomalsut, said on Wednesday.

Mr Chavanont said the request was made through UAE ambassador to Thailand Mohammed Ali Ahmed Omran Al Shamri, who was summoned to see Thailand's Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.

Mr Kasit requested that the UAE government cooperate and not allow Thaksin to stay in the Middle Eastern country, because there was solid evidence the convicted former premier had been using Dubai as a base for political activities against the Thai government.

Mr Chavanont said the ambassador agreed to deliver Mr Kasit's message to the UAE government as soon as possible.

The Thai foreign ministry expected to hear a satisfactory reply from the UAE soon.
